Still Images Paired With Six Word Stories

I had no idea what I wanted to do for this assignment. As I am scrolling through images and images of nothing I actually want to use, I can’t think of anything creative. Suddenly I remember wanting to do the Six Word Story. It had been a while since reading about this, but thought it would be a great way for students to tell a story while also teaching them about word choice.

Another option would be to use Twitter guidelines and have students create a story in 140 characters or less.

I will use this one for 7th Grade.

Often times I have several students who struggle to begin their writing. Using a visual in the classroom, gives them something to think about as they are beginning the writing process. Students may say that they don’t know what to write about, but when given a visual it serves as a basis for a story. Yet, students will come up with a variety of stories from the same image. This a great tool to show students how perspective and personal experiences play a role in how media is viewed.

In the article Visual Literacy Using Still Images, an excerpt from Lynn Burmark’s ebook, Visual Literacy: Learn to See, See to Learn , is quoted as “…It’s not just looking at pretty pictures. It’s understanding how we thing-how we connect what we already know about the world, life, relationships and values to those pictures-and then use them to make sense of our expanded world.”

  1. I love the idea of the Six Word Story. I am going to borrow your idea to use with my Grade 5 EAL class. I think they could easily find an image and write a 6 word story to go along with it. I like the images you chose. I think your kids are going to like this idea as much as you are going to enjoy teaching it. Great work!

    1. Alicia,

  2. I love this idea. I want to share it with my middle school English teachers. We are always trying to come up with new ideas for writing and even though a “picture is worth a thousand words” you only need to use six. The possibilities!! LOVE it!!
